Influence of shear stress state on dynamic fracture of a glass ceramic Macor

The effect of shear stress on the dynamic failure ceramic materials is not sufficiently investigated in published literature. With use a bespoke split Hopkinson pressure bar, this paper presents an effort to investigate compressive response Macor, model material with zero porosity and light weight characteristics. A cone specimen cylindrical specimens varying inclined angles are used introduce Macor ceramic. initiation crack propagation monitored by high speed photography Digital Image Correlation techniques. It found that equivalent at decreases nonlinearly increase stress. images show originates from minimum cross-section obtuse angle corner specimens. cracks propagate parallel plane instead axial loading direction. fractographic analysis shows compacted zone fracture surfaces This indicates significant role process Macor.
